Many mission critical applications run on legacy systems but protecting these core systems is a high priority. Building effective disaster recovery capabilities in-house can be costly.

Windows and Linux systems are taking advantage of cloud-based DR as a Service (DRaaS) – and the same options are required for legacy systems.

Our client is running core business applications on a mix of AIX and IBM i on IBM Power Systems located in two different data centres for production and DR.

The company is adopting cloud services for x86 systems and required a service provider that could deliver as-a-service offerings for the core IBM systems.

Our client faced several issues with some of its legacy IBM platforms reaching end of support.

Downtime was increasing and there were few in-house skilled resources.

The company also wanted to explore options that would allow it to reduce data centre costs by moving to a hosted model.

One possibility was to simply relocate its existing systems to data centres operating by a third-party hosting provider.

While this approach would address the data centre footprint, the legacy issues would still have to be resolved through costly upgrades.

Our client also needed to relieve the pressure on in-house IT staff that did not have the skills to effectively manage, operate and secure IBM Power Systems.

As an alternative to a ‘lift and shift’ of existing systems, CSI presented the company with the advantages of migrating to a cloud-based IaaS and DRaaS solution.

It would improve performance and availability – and was 40% more cost-effective over two years.

The CSI PowerCloud provides IaaS capacity for six IBM i LPARs and two AIX LPARs together with 22TB of storage.

High availability and DRaaS are provided by real-time replication between two separate sites.

CSI also provides a 24×7 service desk as well as a suite of monitoring and managed services to identify and resolve any incidents or changes.

Service levels were agreed to ensure that the client had full confidence in the reliability of the CSI PowerCloud solution.

The CSI PowerCloud allows companies to break away from costly on-premises systems that lack agility. Instead we can comply with constantly changing market demand with speed and ease.

IT Director – Supply Chain Logistics Provider

The CSI PowerCloud solution relieved our client from the need to have any assets on its books and any costs associated with system maintenance.

Migration to the CSI PowerCloud also enabled the company to remove its data centre footprint. All operational costs are now wrapped into a single monthly Opex fee.

CSI’s DRaaS offering is a complete recovery environment in the cloud, enabling rapid failover and recovery.

CSI also runs annual DR tests allowing seven days of 100% failover per LPAR.

The successful migration of the client’s two high priority sites is paving the way for two more sites to be moved off premises and onto the CSI PowerCloud – offering further performance improvements and cost savings.
