CONTEXT

Application development drives market differentiation and this is changing IT budget priorities. There is an increased focus on investing in business outcomes compared to buying products.

Cloud-based ‘as-a-service’ options are well established for Windows and Linux systems and companies are looking for the same flexibility for legacy systems.

GOAL

Our client is running core business applications on a mix of AIX and IBM i on IBM Power Systems located in two different data centres for production and DR.

The company requires a partner that could deliver a single cloud environment that includes both x86 and IBM Power platforms.

CHALLENGE

Our client wanted to explore options that would reduce operating costs without compromising system availability or performance. Any new model must include a primary and secondary data centre supporting real-time replication between systems to provide high availability resilience.

The company is experiencing downtime due to its own IBM Power Systems running different versions of operating systems and the new solution must resolve these issues.

Our client also needed the cloud service provider to take over day-to-day operations including backups.

PARTNERING WITH CSI HAS ALLOWED US TO PROVIDE A ROBUST AND SECURE IT INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT CONTINUED BUSINESS GROWTH AND TO MEET OUR OPERATIONAL RESILIENCY REQUIREMENTS.
WITH CSI MANAGING THE INFRASTRUCTURE, WE ARE FREE TO FOCUS RESOURCES ON PROVIDING THE BEST POSSIBLE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE.

SOLUTION

CSI’s PowerCloud provided IaaS capacity for five AIX LPARs and three IBM i LPARS together with 16TB of storage and a virtual tape library for encrypted backup services.

High availability and DRaaS are provided by real-time replication between production and DR systems.

In the USA, CSI partners with leading data centre provider TierPoint to ensure that CSI PowerCloud platforms are secured in state-of-the-art facilities in different Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regions.

CSI also provides a 24×7 service desk as well as a suite of monitoring and managed services to identify and resolve any incidents or changes.

OUTCOMES

With CSI’s IaaS and DRaaS offerings, our client no longer needs to have any Capex assets on its books.

Service levels were agreed to ensure that the client has full confidence in the reliability of the CSI PowerCloud solution.

CSI’s DRaaS offering is a complete recovery environment in the cloud, enabling rapid failover and recovery. CSI also runs annual DR tests allowing seven days of 100% failover per LPAR.

The flexibility of the CSI PowerCloud allows simple addition of capacity in response to changing demands; the client has already more than doubled IBM i processing power by adding two additional cores to the production LPAR.

57%

57% of companies are running or considering cloud for AIX workloads. 22% of IBM i users are running in the cloud.

#2

Providing high availability and disaster recovery is listed as the #2 IT concern for IBM i and AIX users. (#1 is for IBM is security and application modernisation for AIX)

2/3

Software-based replication for high availability is the clear favourite being used by two thirds of IBM Power Systems users.
